Gifts from the Heart

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many of us. Harvest, Thanksgiving and their weeks of gratitude lead us into that joyous month of December, when we get to spend lots of lovely time with family and friends. Gifts are a huge and exciting part of this!

But no matter our budget and the size of the presents we wrap, the true gift of Christmas is the awakening of the love aspect in our hearts. Even the smallest acts of thoughtfulness at this time of year can do just that, and have a huge impact on others:

  • Taking festive food to an elderly neighbour and spending some quality time with them.
  • Volunteering at a food bank or soup kitchen during the holidays.
  • Clearing out the wardrobe of warm clothes that no longer fit us, and donating them to homeless shelters or charity shops.
  • Checking the cupboards for unopened and good quality tinned and packet foods that we are unlikely to eat, and dropping these off at a charity collection point.
  • Buying festive gifts from the folk running small local businesses, which might be struggling to keep going. We can never underestimate the difference this makes to somebody’s livelihood.
  • Paying coffee and cake forward at a cafe for those who are sleeping on the streets.
  • Making homemade gifts or vouchers for future New Year events – these offerings create unfettered joy for the recipient, and are a great way for us to put our heart into the act of giving when funds are running low. As the saying goes, it’s the thought that counts!

The sky really is the limit when it comes to the heart’s potential to give. Spreading kindness and cheer makes us feel physically and mentally happier too. So it’s mutually beneficial. Not just in December but every month of the year.

This quote from Master Choa Kok Sui, the modern founder of Pranic Healing, goes on further to explain that…

‘Tithing is not an expense. Tithing is a karmic investment! Giving is not only an act of kindness; it is also a smart thing to do!’

Many religions and ancient teachings hint at the same thing in their own words. Giving is a fundamental part of life and it links in with powerful universal laws, so that it has a boomerang effect on our own lives.
